Best Time to Visit Japan: A Month-by-Month Guide

Quick answer: the best time to visit Japan is late March to May, and October to November. Spring brings cherry blossom and mild weather; autumn brings clear skies and vivid foliage. If you want lower prices and thinner crowds, January to February and June are the quietest months — with the important exception of New Year and Golden Week, when the country travels at once.

Below is the full month-by-month picture, including the holiday periods that can make or break a trip.

The seasons in detail

Spring (March–May)

Cherry blossom is the reason most people choose spring, and it’s genuinely worth it — but the bloom moves north with the weather, starting in Kyushu in late March and reaching Tokyo in early April and Hokkaido in early May. The trade-off is cost and crowds: April is the most expensive month of the year in Kyoto. If you’re flexible, late May is the sweet spot — warm, green, and past the Golden Week crush.

Summer (June–August)

June is the rainy season (tsuyu) — but it’s also cheap, green and quiet. July and August are hot and humid, and August is when Japan’s biggest festivals happen: Gion Matsuri in Kyoto, Nebuta in Aomori, Awa Odori in Tokushima. If you’re visiting in high summer, head north to Hokkaido, where it’s 10°C cooler and far less crowded.

Autumn (September–November)

October and November are arguably the best months in Japan: clear skies, comfortable temperatures and the autumn foliage sweeping south from Hokkaido. Note that September is typhoon season and includes Silver Week, a rare five-day holiday in 2026 that will fill domestic travel.

Winter (December–February)

Winter is Japan’s underrated season. It’s cold but dry, the ski resorts are world-class, the onsen are at their best, and prices drop outside New Year. February is the quietest month of the year. It’s also when you can see the snow monkeys near Nagano and the Sapporo Snow Festival.

How Japan’s holidays affect your trip

This is where most travel guides let you down. Japan has several periods when the entire country is on the move, and they change the character of a trip completely.

Period2026 datesImpact
New Year29 Dec – 3 JanMany shops and restaurants closed; temples packed
Cherry blossomlate Mar – mid AprPeak prices and crowds in Kyoto and Tokyo
Golden Week29 Apr – 6 MayTrains and hotels sell out nationwide
Obon~13–17 AugDomestic travel surge; highways jammed
Silver Week19–23 SepRare 5-day break; expect Golden Week conditions

You don’t have to avoid these periods — but you do have to book early and keep your itinerary tight. For the full holiday calendar, see Japan public holidays 2026, and check which dates create a break with the Long-Weekend Finder.

Three conclusions

  • Best weather and scenery: late March to mid-April, and mid-October to late November.
  • Best value: January to February, and June.
  • Best balance of weather, cost and crowds: late May and early October — the two shoulder windows that most travellers overlook.

Frequently asked questions

What is the cheapest month to visit Japan?

February is typically the cheapest, followed by June. Both fall outside Japan’s holiday periods and outside the cherry-blossom and autumn-foliage peaks.

Is it worth visiting Japan during the rainy season?

Yes, if you value low prices and quiet sights. June’s rain is heavy but rarely all-day, and temples and gardens look their most lush. Just pack properly and expect humidity.

What is the best month for cherry blossom in Japan?

Early April for Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka; late March for Kyushu; early May for Hokkaido. The exact timing shifts each year with the weather, so check forecasts close to your travel date.

Should I avoid Golden Week?

If you have flexibility, yes — it’s the single most crowded and expensive week of the Japanese travel year. If you must travel then, book transport and accommodation months ahead and stay in one region.
