A long weekend is what most people actually mean when they ask “when am I off?”. This is where holiday dates turn into real three-, four- and five-day breaks — and then into trip ideas.
Japan long weekends 2026
Golden Week runs 29 April to 6 May, and a rare five-day Silver Week falls 19–23 September. Two of the best break windows in the world.
United States long weekends
Five federal holidays land on a Monday or Friday — Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day, Labor Day and Columbus Day.
Germany long weekends
Ascension Day falls on Thursday 14 May — take the Friday and you have a four-day weekend. Corpus Christi on 4 June does the same.
Spain long weekends
The puente de diciembre — 5 to 8 December — is the long weekend Spaniards plan their whole year around.
Italy long weekends
Two Tuesday holidays — 2 June and 8 December — both of which become four-day breaks with a single day of leave.
UK bank holiday weekends
Most UK bank holidays are already Mondays. Christmas Day on a Friday gives a four-day run into Boxing Day.
Australia long weekends
Anzac Day falls on a Saturday in 2026 — ACT, NSW and WA add a Monday substitute. The rest varies by state.
Canada long weekends
Thanksgiving on Monday 12 October and Victoria Day on Monday 18 May anchor the Canadian long-weekend year.
France long weekends
No regional variation and 11 fixed dates — so the bridges are predictable. Bastille Day lands on a Tuesday in 2026.
How we work out a long weekend
We take every public holiday in a country, then check two things: does it fall next to a weekend, and does it create a bridge day — a working day sitting between a holiday and a weekend that is worth taking as leave.
The result is the list of dates that give you a genuine break, with the minimum amount of annual leave. A Thursday holiday is worth more than a Wednesday one; a Tuesday holiday is worth almost as much as a Friday.
Why some countries are better at this than others
It comes down to how a country schedules its holidays. Germany and Italy both have moveable religious holidays that land midweek, which makes bridge days easy. The United States places several federal holidays on Mondays by law, so the long weekends are built in. Japan concentrates its holidays into Golden Week and Silver Week, which produces two enormous breaks and very little in between.
Turn a window into a trip
A long weekend is only useful if you know what to do with it. Every country calendar links through to travel ideas timed to that exact window — because a three-day break in Tokyo in early May is a different proposition to the same three days in November.
